The young stems are purple, as are the leaf stems and leaf central veins. A bushy vegetation with suckering roots, appreciated for the perfumed winter flowering. Compact bearing, differing from others of this family by long narrow leaves of 3-6cm long, dark green and glossy and the 2 style flowers with pinky red bases. The purple, then black, berries are round, 6mm in diameter and fleshy, occuring after flowers. Fresh soils, slightly acid to chalky, fortified with compost. Sarcococca are tolerant of dry periods once established, as long as these periods are short and not too torrid.
