Phormium, or New Zealand Flax, is a member of the Asphodelaceae family. Originating in New Zealand, Phormium is distinctive for its ribbon-like colourful evergreen foliage. Intolerant of hard frosts but resistant to salt winds, pollution and drought. It is suitable for growth in ordinary soil, and prefers a sunny sheltered position. It can be grown as a specimen, in groups of different varieties or to create a tropical ambiance on terraces and balconies.
