Mespilus germanica or Medlar, from the Rosaceae family, not to be confused with the Japanese Medlar (Eriobotrya japonica), is a small fruit tree of spreading form and with twisted branches. It is currently most often grown on a Hawthorn or Quince rootstock. Its deciduous foliage is ornamented by beautiful white flowers in May-June. Its edible fruits, called Medlars, are harvested after the first frosts in November and are eaten when over-ripe.
