It is a bushy version of the famous cherry plum 'Atropurpurea' (Prunus cerasifera 'atropurpurea' = 'Pissardii'). Crossed with a sand cherry (P. pumila), it forms a compact clump with upright and rigid branches. It can be grown on stem. Its moderate growth ensures very limited maintenance. Its oval foliage of 4 to 6 cm long, is light red in spring and bronze red from summer to autumn. In March-April, it bears a large amount of perfumed, pink flowers, that appear before the leaves and become almost white when the foliage appears. In summer, it bears small purple-black berries. Easy to grow and robust, it tolerates any type of drained soil, even fairly dry. Synonym: 'Crimson Dwarf'. Cistena' means baby in the Sioux language.
