In February-March, little browny-red male flowers in catkins will appear of 5-7cm long. The young shoots are an attractive bright red, then purple colour. The leaves are round or oval of 8-10cm in diameter, deeply veined and delicately serrated. In summer they are green with bronze tints. In September-October, purple-brown nuts appear of 2cm in diameter, decorative and excellent to eat. They are covered with a superb, curvy red skin.
