Majestic and straight conifer with a thick and fibrous red bark. Large cone shaped at its base, with branches that droop down to the ground, the trunk becoming visible on the older subjects. Can have some shoots and undergrowth at the base. Plant it, sheltered from the wind, the cold and the sun, between other trees to protect it when young. Needs a good bit of humidity in the atmosphere and prefers a light and cool soil (will tolerate dry periods if high humidity), non-chalky. Can grow to 30m over 60 years but rarely over 45m when cultivated for the moment (which is still very young for a tree that can live up to 500 to 2000 years...). The highest known specimen 'Hyperion' was over 115m in 2006, in its natural habitat.
