The charming little leaves are heart shaped, 4 to 6cm in diameter. Browny red in the spring, green in summer, turning yellowy-pink in autumn. The leaves, decomposing in the autumn, give off a strong smell of caramel. Delicious ! The female plant has discreet flowers comprised of red stamens in April, before the leaves appear. Forming a pyramidal shrub when young, and becomes a small rounded, more open tree, with airy spread out and tiered branches.
